Results Day 2020
In a scene very different to previous results days, today Bodmin College Sixth Form students collected their A-level results at staggered times and socially distanced. Nevertheless, it was also a scene of smiles and celebrations after a summer-long wait made all the more nerve-wracking by months of remote learning.
Due to schools being shut and exams being cancelled back in March, both GCSE and A-Level students have been awarded grades based on calculations from previous teacher assessments and standardised through a national algorithm. Despite concerns that the system may be lead to disappointing reductions as seen in Scotland, students at Bodmin College celebrated results that have helped them to secure places in their chosen universities, apprenticeships schemes and employment pathways.
For another year running students at Bodmin College celebrated exceptional grades with all students securing exciting future pathways including:
Principal Emmie Seward-Adams was full of praise for her students and staff, saying “It’s been a difficult time for students everywhere. Throughout the two years of sixth form, they are constantly gearing up for their final exams and for these to be suddenly cancelled has been tough. But they have shown incredible resilience, commitment and fantastic independence of which we are very proud. They have truly earned their grades throughout the course of Sixth Form, they have had to work hard consistently and today is about celebrating their achievements and looking forward to exciting new futures. I have no doubt that they will go onto fulfil happy, successful lives and today marks the start of a new exciting journey for them. We are privileged to celebrate with them and to support those who have been affected by the algorithms in securing their futures.”
Mr Joe Crane, Head of Sixth Form, added “Today has been very different from previous years for obvious reasons but something that hasn’t changed is how proud we are of their achievements. Today it’s been great to see them and to help them secure their next steps. Many of these students will move forward with these results to achieve amazing things, be that in further study or beginning a career. Regardless of what they choose to do, I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of them, and will miss everything they have brought to Bodmin College over the last two years.”
Bart described the immense relief that he felt by securing his place studying Medicine saying, “not knowing and feeling like I had no control of my results has been stressful and I was scared I wouldn’t secure my place at such a competitive university but I’m over the moon. Just a sheer sense of relief.”
Jodie was another of the highest achieving students of the year, celebrating A* Further Maths, A Maths and A in Chemistry. Jodie will be going on to study Maths at Plymouth University and said, “I’ve been so nervous not knowing what to expect, I’ve felt physically sick but today I’m delighted! It’s been completely out of my hands which has been frustrating but I’m so pleased. I’ve loved my time here and now I’m so excited to be going onto Uni.”
Josh described being lost for words as he celebrated Triple Distinction*. “I’m so pleased with my results as it means I can go on to study Sport and Exercise Science at Swansea.”
Ms. Seward-Adams added, “Despite the unusual circumstances, these results continue our trend of fantastic Post-16 Achievements and successful pathways. We are very proud of our extensive curriculum, personalised support and high quality the Sixth Form contributes to the community, which is reflected in the ever increasing number of student applications we receive to Bodmin College’s Sixth Form.”
“A huge personal congratulations goes to each and every member of our Sixth Form for yet another set of amazing A-level results. They have truly earned them in a very different way and I wish them the best of luck for whichever path they embark on come September.”
